Magnetic Strip Readers
Magnetic Stripe Readers (MSR) are used for reading the information from credit cards, debit cards (US),
Gift Cards and Customer Loyalty Cards. MSR’s have up to three tracks. Track 1 contains the customer
name, account number and expiry date; Track 2 contains the account number and expiry date and is
required for all Debit and Card Present credit transactions. Track 2 is the minimum required. There are
many different MSR devices which are built into monitors, keyboards or separate devices. Most are
compatible with System Five if the device is configured correctly. The configuration of MSR’s is usually
difficult as they try to decode and remove information from the tracks. System Five requires the full track
information including sentinel characters and a carriage return at the end of track 2. MSR’s built into
PINPads can be used for some transactions.
